DEWA Reduces Carbon Emissions Through Significant Improvement in Electricity and Water Production Efficiency

DEWA Achieves 43.61% Boost in Efficiency, Cuts Over 100 Million Tonnes of CO₂ Emissions Since 2006

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has marked a major milestone in its sustainability journey, significantly enhancing the efficiency of its electricity and water production systems. According to HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, the organisation achieved a 43.61% improvement in production efficiency in 2024 compared to 2006. This leap in performance has led to an accumulated reduction of 104 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) over the 18-year period.

To put this achievement into perspective, the reduction in CO₂ emissions is equivalent to planting 527 million trees, a powerful testament to DEWA’s commitment to environmental preservation and sustainable development.

Driving Climate Action and Economic Growth

HE Al Tayer emphasized that this achievement is a key part of Dubai’s larger vision for a sustainable future, aligned with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

“We are proud to support the UAE’s proactive roadmap to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, as well as the Dubai Carbon Abatement Strategy, which aims to cut carbon emissions by 50% by 2030,” said Al Tayer.

He highlighted that boosting efficiency not only reduces environmental impact but also brings about significant financial savings, supporting sustainable economic growth through climate-conscious innovation.

DEWA’s contributions are central to the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, both of which aim to power the Emirate with 100% clean energy by mid-century.

“Our world-leading projects are turning climate challenges into opportunities. By staying ahead of the curve, we’re working toward limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels and ensuring a greener, more sustainable future for all,” Al Tayer added.

Powering Efficiency Through Innovation

Nasser Lootah, Executive Vice President of Generation (Power & Water) at DEWA, shed light on how DEWA continues to break new ground in operational excellence.

“We’re deeply invested in enhancing the efficiency of electricity and water generation. Our continuous plant upgrades, adoption of cutting-edge technologies, and advanced maintenance strategies are key enablers,” said Lootah.

DEWA adopts a co-generation model for power and water production. By capturing and reusing waste heat from gas turbines, the utility is able to produce additional electricity and provide thermal energy for water desalination. This system maximizes energy use while minimizing waste and emissions.

Furthermore, DEWA uses an innovative hybrid system in its water desalination plants. The system blends technologies like multi-stage flashing (MSF) and seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) to optimize efficiency, reduce costs, and extend the life of the plants.

Leveraging Advanced Technologies

As part of its strategy to lead in smart utility solutions, DEWA collaborates closely with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to implement advanced gas turbine upgrades. These enhancements boost turbine efficiency, performance, and reliability, ensuring sustainable, high-quality utility services for Dubai’s residents and industries.

The authority's emphasis on operational excellence is not just about performance—it's also a reflection of its strong environmental responsibility. Every upgrade and technological adoption is designed to lower carbon emissions, optimize resource use, and support Dubai’s green transformation.

A Model for the Future

DEWA’s remarkable efficiency gains, carbon reduction achievements, and integration of innovative technology offer a blueprint for utilities worldwide aiming to strike a balance between development and sustainability.

As Dubai accelerates its journey toward a net zero carbon future, DEWA remains at the forefront—leading by example, driving innovation, and powering the Emirate’s vision for a cleaner, more sustainable world.
