Dubai Awards Major Contract for Bridge Connecting Dubai Islands to Bur Dubai
Dubai, UAE – In a major step to boost transport infrastructure, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded an AED 786 million contract to construct a new bridge connecting Bur Dubai to Dubai Islands. This project is part of the strategic Al Shindagha Corridor Development Project and aims to ease traffic flow, support urban expansion, and enhance mobility across the emirate.
Bridge Overview and Key Features
The project includes building a 1,425-meter-long bridge with four lanes in each direction, designed to handle 16,000 vehicles per hour. It will cross Dubai Creek, located between the Infinity Bridge and the Port Rashid development area. The bridge will stand 18.5 meters above water level, allowing marine traffic to pass freely through a 75-meter-wide navigational channel.
Additional features include:
- Dedicated pedestrian and cycling tracks
- Elevators for easier pedestrian and cyclist access
- 2,000 meters of connecting surface roads
Previous Projects and Continued Progress
This marks the second bridge-related contract for Dubai Islands. In 2020, RTA and Dubai Holding completed the first phase, which featured:
- A two-lane bridge from Dubai Islands to Al Khaleej Street (northbound)
- A three-lane bridge to Al Khaleej Street (southbound)
- A two-lane bridge from Al Khaleej Street to Dubai Islands
Al Shindagha Corridor Development Project
This new bridge is part of the wider Al Shindagha Corridor project, which spans 13 kilometers and includes the development of 15 key intersections. The project aims to serve both Deira and Bur Dubai, benefiting over one million people. It is expected to reduce travel time from 104 minutes to just 16 minutes, saving approximately AED 45 billion over the next 20 years.
