RTA Completes Installation of Solar Energy Systems at 22 Facilities
In a major step towards sustainable energy and environmental preservation, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has successfully completed the installation of solar energy systems across 22 of its buildings and facilities. This ambitious initiative is part of RTA’s continued efforts to embrace renewable energy solutions and reduce its environmental impact.
The large-scale solar project reinforces RTA’s firm commitment to green transformation and supports multiple strategic sustainability frameworks, including the Zero-Emissions Public Transport Strategy 2050, Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, and the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030.
Harnessing the Power of the Sun
According to Shaikha Ahmad Al Shaikh, Director of Buildings and Facilities at RTA’s Corporate Administrative Support Services Sector, the newly installed solar systems are projected to generate approximately 32 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy annually. This will lead to an estimated reduction of 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year, making a significant contribution to Dubai’s carbon footprint reduction goals.
“This initiative aligns seamlessly with Dubai’s vision for sustainable development and a greener future,” said Al Shaikh. “By promoting renewable energy sources, we are helping to pave the way for a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable city.”
Strategic Locations for Maximum Efficiency
The solar panels have been strategically installed across a wide range of RTA facilities, ensuring optimal usage and efficiency. The 22 sites include:
-
Bus depots in Al Quoz, Al Khawaneej, and Al Rowaiyah
-
Bus stations in Al Satwa and Oud Metha
-
Maintenance workshops in Al Muhaisnah
-
Metro depots and other key operational buildings
These installations are designed to cater to the specific energy needs and usage patterns of each location, optimizing output and ensuring long-term sustainability.
Compliant, Smart, and Sustainable
Al Shaikh emphasized that the solar systems have been implemented in full compliance with the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s (DEWA) regulations and guidelines. Each system was customized to meet the unique operational demands and structural characteristics of the respective facilities.
To maintain peak performance, energy production at each site is monitored in real-time using DEWA’s Shams Dubai Calculator. This smart monitoring system provides live operational data, allowing RTA to track energy efficiency and make data-driven decisions for future sustainability projects.
A Brighter, Greener Future for Dubai
With the successful completion of this solar project, RTA is not only setting a benchmark for public sector sustainability in the region but is also actively supporting Dubai’s broader environmental goals. By investing in clean energy technologies and reducing reliance on non-renewable sources, RTA is helping to create a smarter, more energy-efficient future for generations to come.
This project also serves as a model for other government and private institutions aiming to reduce their carbon emissions and transition towards renewable energy solutions.
