Shanghai Electric has announced its agreement with Abu Dhabi-based future energy company Masdar to work on the Al Sadawi Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Project. The initiative is part of Round 5 under Saudi Arabia’s National Renewable Energy Programme, aiming to boost the kingdom’s clean energy capacity.
The Al Sadawi project, once completed, will mark Shanghai Electric’s largest ever PV EPC undertaking. It is being developed in the Sadawi region of Saudi Arabia, where the groundwork for the solar plant is already underway by the involved consortium.
In November of last year, the Al Sadawi Independent Power Producer (IPP) project had been awarded to a consortium led by Masdar. Key partners GD Power from China and Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco) are also part of this strategic alliance.
A power purchase agreement was signed with the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC), which allows the consortium to build, own, and operate the plant. Commercial operations are expected to commence in the second quarter of 2027.
